Revelation 2 v12-29 (Letters 3 and 4)

The big idea: Stay true to God and remain faithful

In John's vision in chapter 1 v9-20, Jesus told him to write to seven churches. Today, is the turn of churches 3 and 4. (Pergamum and Thyatira).

Letter 3- Pergamum background info:
-Built on a hill
-Rivalled Ephesus in its idol worship
-Everyone came to the cities chief God for healing

v12- It starts by saying how the message is from Jesus, and today he is recognised by being the one with the "sharp two-edged sword" -Just like it said in chapter 1 v16. This sword represents Gods ultimate judgement and authority.
v13- Pergamum was a tough place to be a Christian. Roman Emperors and Gods were worshiped and Christians were persecuted or even killed. But, what is so amazing is that they still refused to deny Christ! They must have some guts! So again, Jesus is commending the people, only this time, for not giving up on Jesus and remaining loyal.
Application: We are to try our hardest to stand firm against the strong pressures and temptations we may face.

BUT (and this is a big But)......
v14-15- They would listen to false teachings an become involved in idol worship and sexual sin. They were doing so well until now!
v16- Jesus was telling them through John to turn back to him and repent- just as we might need to do right now.
v17- The "manna that has been hidden away in heaven" isn't for when we get physically hungry, but when we get spiritually hungry.

Letter 2- Thyatira background info:
-working class town for trade
-the city had no specific focus on any religion

v19- Yet again, the Christians were being commended. This time, it was for growing in their good deeds, for their love, faith, service and endurance.
Application: As well as looking forward to gathering to worship on a sunday, or being overly happy when someone gives their life to God, we should strive to grow in our own faith, love and acts of service.

So, these Christians had got something right again.....
BUT BUT BUT

v20- Some of them were involved in idol worship and sexual immorality. A female prophet in the church was mainly behind it and, (v22-23) was rightly punished for it.
v24-25- But some people kept obeying Jesus and were holding tightly onto him.
Application: We too should hold on tightly to our faith and view any new teaching with caution. Not because we might not like the look of our new leaders, but because it might not be 100% right. It might turn us away from God, or our church, or our faith.
v26-28- Here, Jesus is saying that those of us who do remain faithful til the end will rule over his enemies and reign with him in heaven.
